“So what does Dr. Lippert say about Deacon?” my dad inquired over an early lunch.

Dr. Lippert. It had been a while since I’d thought of him like that. Like the team physician, a highly qualified orthopedic surgeon. Since I thought of him as anything other than my friend, and the man I tried not to have dirty dreams about every night and failed miserably. I kept waking up, face afire with shame, and my hand stuffed down my panties working away at my clit, wet with arousal from dreams of James.

“Dr. Lippert said that the surgery went off without a hitch. He expects Deacon to have an uncomplicated recovery.”

“Do you have a cold?” my dad asked suspiciously.

“No! I’d never come near you if I were contagious or even suspected I was coming down with something, Dad. You know that. Why?” I asked defensively.

“Your voice sounds hoarse. I’ll take your word for it. When I heard from Kali yesterday, she was Facetiming me from some flea market in Croatia and raving about the weather and how blue the sky is there.”

“You’re lucky. I’d have liked to see the marketplace. Instead, I got a video call from a club where it was so loud and dark, I couldn’t really tell what she was saying. She took the phone to the bathroom to show me her dress under brighter lights—it was a pink sequin thing, gorgeous on her, obviously. She’d been dancing a while so her curls were drooping, and she was sweaty, but she looked like a model who’d been partying, not a lumberjack who wore flannel out of season which is what I looked like after I worked out this morning,” I said.

“That’s good, you’re making time to take care of yourself. That job can eat you alive if you don’t learn how to manage it.”

“Manage what? It’s 24-7 and would command more hours if there were any more hours,” I quipped, expecting him to laugh. He shook his head.

“How’s your life going, Kris?” he asked.

“I told you, now that Douglas is out of my way, it’s a lot smoother sailing in the office. Except for the star forward blowing out his shoulder, obviously.”

“I’m very proud of the choices you’re making. You’re bringing the place into the present day, no more nineties-era boys club. And if anyone can kick their asses into the twenties it’s you.”

“Thank you, Dad,” I said, glowing a little from the approval I always insisted I didn’t want.

“But I asked about your life, not your job.”

“I don’t have time for anything else right now,” I replied. “You of all people should understand how demanding the role of operations manager is, especially in the transition to new leadership.”

“I know exactly how time consuming and complicated your role is since I did the job for decades. However, I did more than just work. Wasn’t I happily married to your mother until she passed? Didn’t I show up for every ball game and recital and band concert for you and your sister?”

“Yes,” I said humbly.
